PLAYS
I consider myself a writer (of plays, screenplays, short-stories, nonfiction) and teacher, but honestly, not an actor. As an actor, I have been naked on stage for Marat/Sade, played the butler in The Sound of Music, and did a transexual “take” on the Pirate King without knowing it. I am not good, I’m not even meh, when I have to play somebody. But I do like performing myself. And I love plays. They’re the perfect, reader friendly-form: 1.5 hours and you get the entire story, and most of it happens in your head.
Here is a sampling of mine:
DENALI (2M, 1W)
Three childhood friends decide to climb Mount McKinley in Alaska. Only two come back down. And one writes a best-selling memoir about the experience. A one hour, three-character thriller that asks the question: who owns the story of survival? (Developed at The Orchard Project, winner of three Acclaim nominations from the Cincinnati Critics: Best Script, Best Ensemble, and Best Direction.)
TIMBERLAND (3W, 5M)
A brash young environmental activist has been living 200 feet up in a redwood on a 6 by 8 tree-sit platform for the past year. But a terrible accident brings a stranger into her orbit and her fragile world comes under attack. (Developed at The New Harmony Project, the EcoDrama Festival, and Playwrights’ Center of Minneapolis.
VERSUS (4M, 4W)
Four young wives and mothers take a class in football. A comedy about the sport of life. (Developed at The Lark.)
BASEMENT STORY (1M)
When Austin’s mother summons him home to help clean out the basement, he discovers a childhood game that never really ended. A 10 minute monologue play. Winner of the Missouri Review Best Audio Essay competition and finalist for the Heideman Award, the National 10-Minute Play Competition.
NIGHT OF THE CURE (3M)
AIDS is over. Let’s go out. Three exes meet at their favorite club to get cured. But does getting well mean giving up?
