In 2008, General Motors decided to shutter a 72 year-old stamping plant in Wyoming, Michigan. 1,500 workers at the plant lost their jobs.
RUST is a documentary play that follows what happens to the people who make things when we stop making things.
RUST is written by Austin Bunn with Working Group Theatre, based in Iowa City, IA. It is based on hundreds of hours of interviews with displaced workers, managers, executives, historians, academics, bartenders, consultants, and others. Here’s an excerpt. If you’re interested in bringing RUST to your community, contact austinleebunn @ gmail.com
RUST has been supported by a “Creation Fund” grant from the National Performance Network. It was also supported by a Summer Scholar grant from Grand Valley State University, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The show debuted at the Actors’ Theatre of Grand Rapids in late September, 2011.
RUST features a live original underscore produced by Alex Hamel and Jared Wekenman.
Working Group Theatre is Sean Christopher Lewis (artistic director), Jennifer Fawcett and Martin Andrews. They’ve been making great theatre across the country (and the globe) for three years now.
