SOUNDS
I have a passion for theatrical sound design and narrative. All those years of making soundtracks for my stories is finally paying off. Below is a smattering of experiments in sound collage and some singer-songwriter yearning.
Basement Story (8:30)
A story about the summer I came home to clean out the basement, and what I found. Winner of the Missouri Review’s Audio Essay Prize, broadcast on Quiddity and the University of Iowa’s radio station, and finalist for the Heideman National 10-minute play award.
In the Bedroom (3 min)
A 3 minute sonic exploration of the sounds of my childhood. As a kid, I often felt asleep to the sounds of Alfred Hitchcock stories. Then I got into recording off the television speaker the soundtracks to Escape from New York and The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonsai and His Adventures Across the Eighth Dimension.
Summit Push (2.5 min)
A short narrative about a mountain-climbing tragedy.
Speech Event (3 min)
What did someone say to you that you can never get out of your mind?
Stage Fright (4 min)
This is the most produced I think I’ll ever experience. Recorded in a studio in Chicago, the afternoon of my brother’s rehearsal dinner. The spectacular drumming, bass, electric guitar and violin were courtesy of the Bowl of Fire.
Cleverest (2 min)
A very rough mix of a piano/guitar tune. Recorded from the mantlepiece. Thanks to Steven Jenkins’ fingers.
Type (2 min)
Produced by Steven Johnson, master of many domains.
